As Cyril Rioli began recovering from his first hit-out in three months on Sunday, hoping to return to the senior side from his hamstring injury, Burgoyne said Sydney's long list of goal-kicking options needed adequate attention if the Hawks were to win back-to-back flags by beating the side that toppled them on grand final day two years ago.

"I don't think we fear the 'Buddy factor.' We well and truly know how great a player he is, having seen it first hand for a number of years at this club, but we've got to have faith in our back six that we can do a job not only on Lance, but on Kurt Tippett and the rest of their players who are quite capable of kicking a lot of goals themselves," said Burgoyne.

Franklin signed with Sydney as a free agent one week after helping the Hawks beat Fremantle for the 2013 premiership, and kicked five goals for the Swans in their preliminary final defeat of North Melbourne.

"We can't be pigeonholed into thinking it's all about Lance, because someone else will just jump up and bite us, but in saying that, we've got a number of players who are pretty good mates with him who have first-hand knowledge of how he plays and how he goes about it.

"But we've got to concentrate on the rest of all their forwards and the rest of the team.

"You remain good friends but on the field there's no friendship, especially in a grand final. We'll be going 100 per cent out there, and when he has the ball and when he doesn't have the ball he's just another player out there."

Rioli is not the only player set to push for a last-minute recall this week, with Ben McEvoy and Brad Sewell pulled from the Box Hill team that lost to Footscray in Sunday's VFL grand final.

Burgoyne said the players trusted the coaches to pick the side that would give them the best chance of beating Sydney, understood some of them would be disappointed after the final selection meeting and that the way Rioli recovered from Sunday's game and trained during the week would be crucial to his chances of playing.

"He can be anything, whether that's the sub or on the field, but he has to get through this week first and train with the team, obviously recover today as all the boys normally do and train this week," Burgoyne said.

"You definitely feel more excited when he's in the team, he's one of those players who brings the x-factor and all those different things, and when he's 'on', he's very hard to stop.

"He provides that for our team and we've got a number of players who work very well in tandem with him, but he's got to get through the week, train well and give the coaching group something to pick from, and we've got a number of players in that same boat.

"We talk about Cyril coming in but you've got McEvoy and Sewell out as well.

"It's another challenging decision for the match committee, whether McEvoy comes in, or Sewell. I'm glad I'm not coach this week - they're some challenging decisions and this is why they're the coaches and we'll just get out there as players and play and have faith that with the decisions they go with, they'll have the team's best interests at heart."
