The Growing Tall Poppies in Science Program was created in 2008 by the partnership between the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coherent X-ray Science and Santa Maria College, Northcote.
The goal of the program is to increase the number of students studying science, especially girls in physics to year 12, in order to increase the pool of students going into these fields.
The program teams secondary students and scientists in a mentoring program to allow students to have authentic science experiences to connect the importance, relevance and impact of the physical sciences for humanity. This program gives students reasons to select science subjects at senior high school and gives purpose to studying physics to year 12. It has been shown to be successful in engaging students to remain in physics above and beyond the state average.
The scientist mentors are young men and women who are passionate and support the education community to publicly engage people with their science.
Ms Stocks will enjoy a one week immersion program in Melbourne with outstanding scientists and their scientific facilities during this September school holidays, attend an award ceremony in Melbourne Bio 21 facility during October, attend a Science Communication Conference Day at the Australian Synchrotron in December and be assigned for the duration of 2015 a scientist mentor network of outstanding young research scientists, who will be paired up with the Junior Tall Poppy's school and will become part of the science curriculum and community.
