The Health Champions’ workshop is an initiative of Healthy Together Grampians Goldfields, and was designed to support participants, mentors and others involved in the Ararat Active8 program to understand more about how they can influence their own health and the health of their families, friends and community in the places where they live, work, learn and play.
With health being linked to lifestyle related disease, and good health a priority of the Ararat Rural City Community, it was great timing to have a local Health Champions workshop to build on and support the incredible network of local community members championing good health and leading local community action to live healthier lifestyles.
Twenty enthusiastic attendees were encouraged to share their interests and explore the strengths that exist in their communities.
“Ararat Rural City Council sees the recruitment of health champions from within our community as crucial to extending and sustaining the work being done to improve the health and wellbeing of our residents and embed the culture shift we are striving for,” Ararat Rural City Council Mayor, Cr Paul Hooper, said.
“It’s up to all of us to work together and support each other. These workshops will assist people to have the skills and knowledge to do this more confidently.”
The evening focussed on healthy living and provided participants with strategies to support the local community increase access and opportunities for healthy eating and physical activity.
Jeremy Hearne and Meredith Budge, project leaders for Healthy Together Victoria Health Champions’ initiative, recognise the strong impact that community members can have when they take a local role in leading health lifestyle change in their local community.
“With motivated and passionate community members Ararat is well on its way to a healthier culture,” Mr Hearne said.
