Three years ago, Audrey Lacroix was so anxious she could not stand on a starting block at any time, let alone in a swimming race. On Monday night, she became, at 30, a Commonwealth champion. On a night when the presence of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, completing their personal ironman of events, proclaimed the end of the old guard, Lacroix’s gold medal was the most defiant statement that seniors could still have their day.
