ARARAT - Surrounded by family and friends, Ararat's Mary Pope celebrated her 100th birthday last week.

Mrs Pope and her family enjoyed her centenary celebrations at Kooringa in Dobie where she grew up.

Receiving a letter from the Queen was a highlight of the day for Mrs Pope, as well as cutting a magnificent cake befitting a 100th birthday.

Following is a poem that Cassie Ryan wrote and read out on the day for Mrs Pope, which outlines some of her life:

Back in 1914

Where we all stand today

Mary Lewis arrived

On the 7th of May

Born to William and Maria

One of 5 Lewis clan

She grew up at Kooringa

Where her Dad worked the land

Unlike children today

Stuck in traffic on course

Her schooling commute

Was on back of a horse

She loved playing tennis

And dancing at night

And it was doing these things

She met the love of her life.

With her delicate backhand

A young man would fancy-her

Always dressed to impress

In a brand new green lancia
