Currently a high number of cats are housed at the pound and are in desperate need of a new home.
Trish Taylor from Victorian Dog Rescue said they are lovely cats that most likely someone has had as a kitten and decided they didn't want as they got older or perhaps because of the cost of desexing.
"Victorian Dog Rescue try to save the cats where we can but to help more we run this program where for $50 any local can adopt a fully vet worked cat (chipped, vaccinated and desexed) and Victorian Dog Rescue pay for the balance of the vet work," she said.
"Then if they pay for registration too they have a legal cat at a discounted price.
"Last year we desexed many cats in Ararat belonging to owners with a social welfare card. To adopt one of these cats please telephone the pound and mention this scheme."
Ms Taylor said Victorian Dog Rescue was also very keen to find foster carers, drivers and volunteers in the Ararat region for the dogs and cats at the Ararat Pound.
