Ararat police arrest four people over rail yard vandalism

ARARAT - Ararat police have made a major breakthrough in their year long investigation into recurrent acts of graffiti at the Ararat rail yard.

Officers arrested and charged four youths from Melbourne after they were allegedly caught vandalising train carriages inside the rail compound last weekend.

It was 11.30pm Saturday night when police first disturbed five youths, all aged 17 and 18 inside the rail yard allegedly attempting to spray carriages with their tags.

They gave chase on foot but all five offenders escaped. They were later located sitting in two cars in the Ararat McDonald's car park where they were arrested by police.

Four of the five were charged and bailed to appear at the Ararat Magistrates' Court on May 5.

They were charged with various offences including criminal damage and trespass.

It is unclear at this stage whether last weekend's incident is related to several acts of vandalism at the Ararat rail yard in recent months which has caused thousands of dollars worth of damage.

Police continue to investigate the other reported instances of graffiti inside the rail yard.
