The job will be a career change for Mr Khan who in his working life has worked in a petrol station, as an IT specialist and also run a restaurant.
Mr Khan said he was ready for a change from his career as an IT specialist in Ballarat and applied for the prison officer role because he wanted a job closer to home.
"A career as a prison officer is very secure work and I think there must be something good about working for Corrections Victoria because many people at the prison have been there for a long time," he said.
"During my training many of the people I worked with told me it was the best job they'd ever had - flexible hours, good working conditions, close to home and secure employment."
Mr Khan said the prison officer training opened his eyes to the opportunities for career progression offered by working for Corrections Victoria and the Department of Justice.
"During the training we heard from a range of people who started their career as a prison officer, but had since moved into different areas such as policy or management."
"It was good to see that you are really encouraged to apply for different roles within the prison and no one stops you from moving around."
Helping prisoners get back on their feet is something that interests Mr Khan.
"I'm looking forward to doing prisoner case management, where you sit down and chat with them and see what you can do to get them back on track," he said.
