The Melbourne woman, 35, was found dead in a collapsed tent at a property on Bonn Road, Rochester about 9am on Sunday.
The woman had been at the Got Milk music festival – a small event on a private farm, which was attended by about 300 people.
Major collision investigation unit Detective Inspector Bernie Rankin said most festival goers had camped for the night.
Detective Inspector Rankin said the woman had suffered severe trauma.
A 24-year-old man from Westmere, near Lake Bolac, was bailed after being charged earlier this week.
He was charged with culpable driving, dangerous driving causing death, driving whilst under the influence of alcohol and failing to stop and render assistance at a scene.
He will appear in Bendigo Magistrates Court on Friday.
Police have not released the man’s name.
Paramedics were called to the festival about 9am on Sunday, but the Yarraville woman was dead by the time they arrived. Organisers cancelled the event after the death.
An email sent from organisers to festival goers before the event warned of the dangers of driving on site.
“No driving: Keep your car parked once you get to the Milky Bay site. If you arrive after dark, leave your car in the first paddock and walk up to the party from there. It is probably a good idea to take your keys out of the ignition too,” the email said. The email also referred to a first-aid tent.
“If you are not feeling well or have hurt yourself in any way, drop into the first-aid tent for a patch-up or a rest, and please (drink responsibly).”
The Got Milk website was taken down shortly after the death.
Fairfax media contacted the organisers for comment.
