The club will hold a media conference at 3.30pm (AEDT) when it will detail the reasons behind the decision.
Brown, 30, has been suspended since an incident in Los Angeles in which he hit teammate Steven May and broke his jaw.
The incident occurred after a disagreement between May and Hawthorn's Josh Gibson, following the arrival of pop star Rihanna at a nightclub.
The Suns have been investigating the incident for almost a week, involving interviewing several players.
Brown played 46 games for Gold Coast after 159 for Hawthorn. He signed a one-year extension to his contract last season.
