Bresnan is now an official member of the touring party, having recovered from a back injury, which suggests he is firmly in the frame to replace Chris Tremlett for the second Test.

He said he would also bring some much-needed positivity to a dressing room that has had to cope with a thrashing in Brisbane and the subsequent departure of Jonathan Trott with a stress-related illness.

He proved his fitness by bowling 26 overs for the England Performance Program against a Queensland Second XI last week, taking four wickets in the first innings, and insisted he was ready to be the workhorse of the attack.

''I wouldn't have put my name in the hat if I wasn't ready,'' Bresnan said. ''I am quite a positive bloke and player. Hopefully coming back into the squad does give the lads a lift.''

Bresnan's combination of grunt and skill troubled Australia at the MCG in 2010, when he helped England rebound after a hammering in Perth, and in the most recent series in England.

The tourists have so far fought a losing battle on and off the field. Stuart Broad and Kevin Pietersen awoke to a newspaper splash of their late night out at a city nightclub four days before the Test, on the night of their delayed arrival into Adelaide from Alice Springs. There was no suggestion of excessive drinking or bad behaviour, and no suggestion they had broken a curfew.

''I don't understand why it should be [an issue],'' Bresnan said.

''They're grown guys, grown men. They've not broken any rules as far as we're concerned. We have quite relaxed rules within the team and anyone who breaks those is dealt with accordingly.''

Shane Watson, who was banned for a Test in India this year for failing to complete a homework task, has since welcomed the more relaxed environment under Darren Lehmann. ''They must have just got their homework in early, mustn't they, so they had plenty to celebrate,'' he grinned.
