Twelve years ago the idea of a community gathering place for St Mary's Parish was first mooted and almost four years ago a committee to examine possibilities and come up with a plan to construct and finance such an asset was set up by Father Brendan Davey, Parish Priest of St Mary's, Ararat.
The new Parish Community Centre is now a reality due largely to the generosity of parish and community members and in part to the dedication, perseverance and commitment of a small group of parishioners with vision and determination.
Members of the original committee were Father Brendan Davey, Peter Brady (chairperson), Anne-Marie Joyce (secretary), Tony and Angela Reynolds, Sue and Maurie Jess, Tom Rees, Irene Karslake, Margaret Olle, Margaret Ryan, Charlie Reid, Mary Powell and Gaye Peoples.
Ms Karslake passed away before she could see the completion of the project which she had supported so enthusiastically and Mr and Mrs Jess have since moved to Ballarat. A further two members, John Brennan and Terry Weeks were later co-opted to join the committee to assist with fundraising.
This new gathering place at the rear of the church allows for ready access for the elderly, those with disabilities, youth and families. It has already been used for many parish meetings and community celebrations, conferences, multicultural meals, ecumenical services, gatherings after funerals and Sacramental celebrations and other occasions.
Max Perovich and Associates Pty Ltd was the building designer and Andrew Eastick the builder.
The official opening and blessing of the new Parish Centre by the Bishop of Ballarat, Paul Bird CSsR will be held on Sunday December 8 following Mass at 10.30am and all are welcome to attend.
The profit from this week's Trash and Treasure market at Alexandra Hall will go to assist funding for the Centre.
