ARARAT - At Ararat Rural City Council's meeting held at the Ararat Performing Arts Centre last week, which saw more than 200 people attend to voice their concerns over the closure of the Ararat Olympic Swimming Pool, the issue of the Mayor having the casting vote on a rescission motion was reported incorrectly in The Ararat Advertiser.
Cr Gwenda Allgood originally moved to rescind a motion passed at the September meeting that 'The Ararat Olympic Pool be closed permanently, the site be secured and demolition and rehabilitation of the site proceed with consideration being given to the installation of a water play facility for the area'.
This was not voted on by council.
Each councillor was given the opportunity to provide their views on the pool issue, following which Mayor Cr Ian Wilson suspended standing orders.
Councillors then left the auditorium which allowed council to draft an amendment to the rescission motion, which stated 'the motion as moved by Cr Allgood stands as the first part of the motion and that the second part of the motion be that the pool remains closed pending further consultation and a report on future options be presented back to Council'.
This was carried unanimously by Council.
