ARARAT - Ararat school buses have been equipped with new signage following concerns raised during student drop offs and pick ups.
Christians Bus Company decided to install the new give way signs on the back of their vehicles following concern from a number of bus drivers about the issue of dropping off and collecting children at both St Mary's and Ararat 800 Primary Schools.
The concern was that after the students had got off the bus the drivers were finding it very frustrating to try and safely indicate to exit from where they were parked back into the flow of traffic.
Local vehicles have not been giving way to the buses and in turn the drivers are forced to wait, which creates problems with the business' other pick up scheduling.
The law indicates that in a built up area a bus may drive from a parked position on the side of a road to enter the nearest traffic lane and is not required to give way to other vehicles in the nearest lane provided that:
The bus driver signals properly
The bus driver takes care to allow other vehicles to give way
It is safe for the bus to enter
Ararat Police are hopeful the the new signs will help bus drivers follow their set time schedule.
