ARARAT - Ararat Rural City Council parks and gardens staff have been kept busy over the winter period throughout Ararat and the rural towns.
In the Alexandra Gardens general maintenance has been carried out, the annual garden beds have been fertilised and fallowed in preparation for a spring planting, Council's orchid collection has been maintained and moved to the glasshouse for display, the ponds have been cleaned out and the paths in the native section in the west end of the gardens were prepared then asphalted.
At Alexandra Oval the playing surface has been maintained for the football season, soil moisture sensors within the playing surface have been relocated to improve irrigation efficiency following the installation of the new sprinkler system and the cypress hedge near the clubrooms/grandstand was trimmed.
Across the Ararat city, the nature strips in Montgomery Street were sown with grass seed, a drip irrigation system was installed in the nature strip in Barkly Street at the Edith Cavell Reserve and trees were planted in Palmerston Street beside the railway.
The rural towns received their routine mowing, edging, gardening, spraying and tree maintenance work, while a number of large dead pine trees were removed in Hotel Street, Elmhurst.
All playgrounds have been inspected and maintenance has been carried out across the municipality and soft fall areas were topped up.
Tree maintenance, including cleaning up storm damage and clearing of roads for accessibility, were carried out at Jack and Jill Kindergarten, Ords Orchard Road, Watgania Road, Moyston/Rocky Point Road, Olivers Gully Reservoir, Tatyoon Road, Palmerston Street, Western Highway, Buangor Road, Hotel Street, Yalla Y Poora Road, Webbs Road, Wills Hill Road, Moyston/Great Western Road, Aston Road, Moore Street and Stock Route Road.
All Elm trees on Council land were also treated to control Elm Leaf Beetles.
