ARARAT - Next year two young Ararat women will experience life in Cambodia while at the same time assisting local Cambodian children housed in an orphanage.
Ellie Price and Abby Main will head to Cambodia in January to undertake a four week orphanage care volunteer placement. During their time there they will live with a local Cambodian family while volunteering fulltime in an orphanage close by.
"Cambodia has an incredibly high number of orphans comparative to population," Ms Main said.
"Many children have lost their parents due to HIV, while other parents cannot provide food, accommodation and education for their children."
Orphanage work will range from cooking, administration, cleaning, painting, singing and sports to assisting with homework, feeding, caring for children and teaching.
The women will be staying in a rural/remote area to enhance their experience and absorb the local community lifestyle.
"Staying with a family is a great way to learn the Cambodian way of life, meet local people, eat local food and engage in local customs and traditions," Ms Price said.
Both of the girls are starting to fundraise to purchase supplies and equipment to take to the orphanage.
All money raised will be going directly to educational, art, craft and sporting equipment such as a music player for dancing, magnifying glasses for science, skipping ropes and balls for sport and educational and colouring books for school.
Anyone wishing to support the orphanage by donating money or supplies, please contact Abby or Ellie on 0413344460 or 0417149192.

Collection tins will also be located at Ararat Subway, Skinco and the Ararat YMCA.
