Council received a letter from the Lake Fyans Recreational Area Committee of Management asking if the Ararat Rural City Council would be prepared to nominate a representative to be part of the management group.
The Northern Grampians Shire is currently represented on the committee but not the Ararat Rural City Council.
Officers reported to council that representation on the Lake Fyans Recreational Area Committee of Management would ensure the Ararat community have input to the ongoing management of what is a major source of water supply for the Ararat City and surrounding townships.
Lake Fyans falls under the management of the Grampians Wimmera Mallee Water Authority.
The Lake Fyans Committee of Management was established in 1979 under the 1958 Water Act and the then State Rivers and Supply Commission. The responsibility of this Committee is to maintain the environs of Lake Fyans for the Grampians Wimmera Mallee Water Authority.
Under the Water Act and associated regulations pertaining to Lake Fyans Recreational Area, the Committee consists of nine members made up of representatives from government departments, local Councils and four other persons from the community.
Cr Fay Hull said because Lake Fyans is a major source of our water supply it therefore had a very direct impact on our community.
"The recreational area around the lake is also very important, it has been used by citizens of the community for a long time," she said.
"It is important that we have some input into the way the committee of management runs."
