Brian Burke Ararat's Citizen of the Year

ARARAT - A man long dedicated to working to provide greater acceptance of people with a disability has been awarded this year's Ararat Rural City Citizen of the Year.

Brian Burke, who was unable to attend the awards ceremony on Australia Day in Alexandra Gardens, is CEO of McGregor Community Services and well known across the wider Ararat community.

In announcing the award, Cr Ian Harris said this year's award goes to a very special resident of the municipality for their outstanding commitment to the community over many years.

"This person is a dedicated person who is passionate and has been instrumental in providing for the needs of a significant number of members of our community," Cr Harris said.

"Actively involved in many committees his leadership and hard work is an integral part of the wider Ararat community, both socially and economically."

Cr Harris said Mr Burke has a strong involvement within the disability sector in Ararat providing greater acceptance of people with a disability.

"He has established many partnerships with community organisations, schools and individuals who work in a voluntary capacity with people with a disability and understand their needs and the contributions they make," Cr Harris said.
