ARARAT - The Alexandra Croquet Club has been forced to cancel its annual Association/Golf Tournament next month due to the damaged lawns at the club.
The Ararat Advertiser reported earlier this month that the club had been fighting a losing battle with a nest of rabbits which have been burrowing on the greens and leaving extensive damage, particularly to the A grade lawn near the Ararat Bowling Club.
Alexandra Croquet Club president Carmel Biggs said the problem, which has been going on for 12 months, has left the lawns unplayable and that the club is very upset at the cancellation of the tournament.
Croquet players from as far as Warracknabeal and surrounding areas in the Wimmera have attended the tournament on previous occasions, with the event a major fundraiser for the year.
The cancellation will result in a loss of approximately $400 for the Alexandra Croquet Club.
