ARARAT - A new team has come storming into town giving teenage girls with a passion for Australian Rules Football the opportunity to take part in an all female competition.
Will Bell, coach of the newly formed Ararat Storm Girls' Football Club, said the team would give girls aged between 13 and 18 years old the opportunity to further their skills and continue to play a sport they love.
"Fiona Murphy was talking about how players in the under 13s have nowhere to go once they finish in that competition, so I said we should look at getting a girls' team up and running and it has gone from there," he said.
"There are a lot that seem to be interested and are talking about it. Games are played on Sundays so even if girls that play netball want to join in they can.
"There have been plenty of girls that have taken part in AusKick and hopefully we can attract even more to the game now."
Murphy has come on board as the team manager, while Olivia Miocic will be Bell's assistant coach.
Miocic, who plays football with North Ballarat Women's Football Club and has played for the University of Ballarat in Adelaide and the Gold Coast, said she has always been passionate about the game.
