Tomorrow is World Environment Day, which the UN General Assembly established in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm conference on the human environment, the UN's first environmental conference. It aims to increase awareness of the environment and to encourage action. This year's theme is "CO 2: Kick the habit. Towards a low carbon economy". There are a range of events planned to celebrate the day. Wizard weaver The Powerhouse Museum is presenting an illustrated talk on "Sustainable traditions from silk farming to Lao textiles" with Kommaly Chanthavong, Lao master weaver and her daughter, Boby Vosinthavong, today (12.30 to 1.30pm) and on Sunday (2 to 3pm). This talk is free with museum admission. On Sunday, Chanthavong will demonstrate the art of hand weaving at 1pm and 3pm (before and after the talk). Chanthavong was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 for her artistic endeavours and contribution to improving the lives of women and their families in rural Laos. Climate power Ultimo TAFE has a lunch-time event tomorrow from noon to 1.30pm with information bags, environmental activities, worm farms and solar power displays, live entertainment and a free sausage sizzle. Eco morning From 9 to 11 tomorrow morning, Parramatta council is setting up in the Jubilee Room of the Town Hall, Civic Place, Parramatta. There will be free native plants for the first 100 visitors, instructions on how to calculate your carbon footprint using solar-powered computer laptops/programs, information packs on solar power, bush carers sharing their knowledge and an education trailer with details of a number of issues particularly important for the area, such as weeds in urban bushland and water pollution. Ethical fashion At Chatswood Mall, Victoria Avenue, Willoughby council will hold an eco-ethical fashion show tomorrow at 6pm. Jeanne Little will be the celebrity MC and the show will showcase organic, recycled, ethical fashions and where you can find them. Green wheel At Eastpoint Shopping Centre, Edgecliff, Woollahra council will host an information stall from noon to 4pm tomorrow. The stall will offer information for residents and shoppers to learn more about environmental issues and what you can do to live more sustainably. Try your hand at the "enviro wheel" and take home a free environmental product to help you on your way to being greener. Action days Ku-ring-gai council has been holding a series of action-planning sessions with local residents, looking at nine themes including natural environment, built environment, community and neighbourhoods. The final session, timed for World Environment Day, is on tomorrow from 6 to 8.30pm in the council chambers, 818 Pacific Highway, Gordon. Energy savers Randwick council is offering energy- and water-saving rebates on rainwater tanks, greywater systems and energy-saving downlights. Residents can find out about the rebates and the rebate process at an information workshop this evening from 6.30 to 8 at the council's administration centre, 30 Frances Street, Randwick. Tomorrow, members of the council's Eco Heroes Club, children aged 6 to 8 and their parents, will have their first meeting at Yarra Bay Bicentennial Park, Yarra Road, La Perouse. Twenty-five of the children will plant trees. Free food The City of Sydney is recognising the green credentials of bicycle commuters by offering them free breakfasts tomorrow morning. Cyclists are invited to drop by at Union Square, Pyrmont, Observatory Hill or Hyde Park South between 7.30 and 9 to score coffee, tea and pastries as well as free cycling accessories.
