Players back in the swing of summer tennis

27 Oct, 2009 08:23 AM
ARARAT - The Ararat City Lawn Tennis Club's summer pennant was in full swing on Saturday as teams contested round two of the competition.

A number of players had their first hit out after missing the opening round, with Spalding McCutcheon and Stan Hamilton and Sons snatching the four points.

Spalding McCutcheon took on Sportspower, coming out on top 5-83 to 6-82.

Alison Burmester was particularly impressive for the winning side with her low slice shots and stood up well against the hard-hitting Claire Harricks.

Burmester was well supported by substitute player Kevin Elgood and the speedy Tammie Meehan.

John Hannett placed balls to great effect for KFC and managed to account for his younger, faster opponent in Jacob Hamilton, to win the points in a hard fought singles' set.

Jake Nyikos also played well against his more highly rated opponents and served extremely well.

Jaqui Ralph was the stand out of the KFC ladies, winning several points with her forceful driving, but it was not enough to get them over the line.

The clash between Stan Hamilton and Sons and the Ararat RSL saw Stan Hamilton record a comfortable 10-95 to 1-47 victory.

Club coach Sam Hoffmann used his superior skills to dominate the doubles' sets but had to rally through several exchanges to win points against Jackson Bohner in the singles.

Hoffmann ultimately proved the more consistent player but Bohner played better than the score indicated.

Pam White led the Stan Hamilton ladies and had opponents on the back foot chasing her well placed lobs and short drop shots.

Despite being beaten convincingly, RSL had a number of stand out players.

Justin Pelly impressed with his high smashes and speed around the court, while Jaqui Kiel was able to return a number of high bouncing balls.
