ARARAT - Cellar dweller Clayfield Wines cannot seem to catch a break in the Ararat City Lawn Tennis Club's Wednesday night competition.

The nail biting match between Clayfield and Mitre 10 went down to the wire with Mitre 10 claiming victory by the skin of its teeth, 37-36.

Justin Pelly played true to form in the number one position, attacking balls early and putting plenty of pressure on his Clayfield opponents.

Morgan Gason was a standout for the losing side, recording a win and two draws while impressing with his steady cross-court drives.

J Ward accounted for Dick Smith with a punishing 35-game defeat, 48-13.

J Ward number one Sam Hoffmann moved quickly, relentless in his pursuit of every point while opposition player Rod Vearing did his best to support his partners with his steady play.

A close tussle between Embroidability and Ararat RSL saw Embroidability the eventual victor, 38-35.

Strong server Aaron Lewis placed balls to his team's advantage all evening.

Mark Direen saved many points with extraordinary dash, almost resulting in an upset for RSL.

Sportspower proved too strong for Bendigo Bank with an eight-game sweep, 31-23.

The consistent Ross McGregor placed the ball well and instrumental in Sportspower's success while Ben Pietsch tried his hardest for Bendigo Bank, providing many great returns.

The Indian Summer boys had to give first priority to their farms on Wednesday, resulting in a forfeit to KFC.
