Feathers fly as KFC claims victory

22 Dec, 2009 08:11 AM
ARARAT - KFC has taken out mid season honours in the Ararat City Tennis Club men's competition.

After another win last Wednesday, the team finished two points ahead of runner-up Embroidability.

Both sides were presented with their trophies at the conclusion of last week's matches.

During the evening the club bid farewell to two stars, Justin Pelly and Sam Gason, who will not take part in the second half of the season due to work and school commitments.

In a mid-competition shake-up, a new Clayfield Wines team will be added in the New Year.

The team will consist of Michael Harricks, Aaron Lewis, Carl Barry and Neil Blizzard.

Small changes will also be made to other teams.

Cameron Ralph will return to play with Embroidability, Ben Pietsch will join Bendigo Bank, Ross McGregor will share top spot in KFC and Damien Dowling will make the move to Sportspower.

The final round of competition for this year saw KFC defeat Dick Smith, 4-35 to 2-24.

Rick Thomas demonstrated the advantage of experience and was able to boost KFC's score with well placed serves and returns.

Ashley Cooper and Wayne Jerram were Dick Smith's top contributors.

Embroidability was able to clinch runner-up honours with a 4-33 to 1-19 victory over J Ward.

Aaron Lewis was at his brilliant best for the winning side and anticipated balls well.

Despite the best efforts of Sam Hoffmann and Don Rowe, J-Ward lacked strength on the night.

Sportspower managed to secure a convincing win over Mitre 10, 4-41 to 1-24.

Ross McGregor and Jake Nyikos gave their Mitre 10 opponents a lesson in tennis, both delivering some strong shots and impressive defensive play.

Newcomer Sam Wilkinson put on an impressive display but it was not enough to get his side over the line.

While Stan Hamilton and Sons finished in fourth place on the ladder, it suffered a shock loss at the hands of Bendigo Bank last week.

Players failed to gel on the night, going down in convincing fashion, 5-40 to 1-19.

John Hannett shone for the victors and helped to put the match away with some terrific returns.
