ARARAT - Ararat Swimming Club was awarded the prestigious Barrow Shield at the Wimmera Swimming Championships, the final Wimmera Swimming Association meet for the 2009/10 season.
Ararat swimmers put in their best performance for the season to win the shield, which is awarded to the club with the highest average of points per swimmer at the Wimmera Championships.
Ararat was also the fifth placed club for the combined total of all meets in the Wimmera swimming season.
The swimmers had a great day, with each member of the Ararat club progressing through their heats to contest at least one individual final.
The boys' 13-14 years age group saw four Ararat boys competing in Will Margetts, Zander Laidlaw, Nick Fleming and Nick Phillips.
Fleming had a great swim in his 100-metre backstroke final, narrowly missing out on the 100-metre freestyle final after swimming an eight-second personal best.
Laidlaw contested three individual finals and improved his 100-metre freestyle time in both the heats and the final.
Margetts had a busy day in the pool swimming in three finals and managing three personal best times.
He has shown continual improvement throughout the season and knocked a combined total of 20 seconds off his three different events at the championships.
Phillips was another big improver in his first season, qualifying for two finals and slashing 18 seconds off his 200-metre individual medley time in a determined effort.
Alanna Woods put in a big swim to finish sixth in her girls' 12-13 years 100-metre backstroke event while Alice Laidlaw also performed well in her 50-metre backstroke event, only just missing out on a medal in the girls' 17-29 years age group.
It was one of three finals she contested on the day.
Laura Reynolds acquitted herself well in the same division, competing in nine events.
For her efforts, she won four gold, four silver and a bronze medal along with the Wimmera Championship sash for her age group for achieving the most points.
Jenny Woods swam strongly in the women's 30 and over division.
She contested four finals, just falling outside medal contention in her 50-metres butterfly and backstroke events, claiming two fourth placings.
Ararat Swimming Club members also had a strong showing in the relay events.
Margetts, Laidlaw, Phillips and Fleming took out silver in the boys' 14 and under freestyle relay and bronze in the 16 and under freestyle and medley relays.
Three swimmers were selected to represent the Wimmera Swimming Association at the upcoming Victorian Country Interdistricts swim meet.
Fraser Heard, Reynolds and Margetts were chosen to represent the Wimmera district at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.
The club is now looking forward to celebrating the end of the season with a presentation night.
The event will be held this month.
