ARARAT - The Ararat Kings have began training in preparation for their debut season in the region's inaugural rugby league competition.
Kings treasurer Nick Sammut said the club was progressing nicely as the first game of the season approached.
"We have tentatively set a date as the first weekend in May, with the date to be finalised with the VRL (Victorian Rugby League)," he said.
"Numbers are looking good, we have 17 players signed and several more have expressed an interest."
Sammut said the first year would just be a senior competition, and when more interest has been generated the club will be looking to introduce junior and women's tag competitions.
Along with Ararat, teams have been established in Stawell and Lake Bolac, with the league administrators working towards a fifth team in either Horsham or Warrnambool.
Sammut said games would be played on Sunday, as to not clash with more dominant sports such as Australian Rules.
"We are inviting everyone to training (Wednesday night's at 6.30pm) at Kelly's Oval, which is at the end of George Road. You can never have too many numbers," he said.
"There is lots of player experience in the group already, guys who have played in suburban leagues or in New Zealand.
"Having said that, we encourage everyone to have a go regardless of experience. I have never played competition before, but at training right now we learning the basics and getting the beginners up to speed."
The Ararat Kings committee, led by club president Sheree Edwards and senior coach Tui Tewahre, has been working tirelessly to generate funding and sponsorship for equipment and uniforms.
The club is holding an information meeting this Sunday at Kelly's Oval at 2pm with all current and interested players encouraged to attend.
