ARARAT - A month of training and preparation paid off for Ararat West Primary School students when they competed against six other schools in the Jump Rope for Heart Demonstration Showcase.
Eighteen students from grades four to six participated in four events at the State Hockey/Netball Centre in Melbourne.
Ararat West came in fourth in the Teams' Showcase event, narrowly missing out on third place.
Ararat West physical education teacher Josh McDougall said it was an impressive effort by his students in their first showcase.
The students pulled off a six minute routine involving all aspects of skipping - individual short rope, partner, long and multi-ropes and equipment (mini trampolines, go-go balls and hoops) - while skipping in time to music.
The teams were judged on their presentation, skill, creativity/choreography and team work, with points deducted for unintentionally stopping the rope or going over time.
The students then participated in one-minute individual routines and paired routines consisting of two or three children.
''The competition gave the kids a great opportunity to not only showcase their skills, but to learn from other teams,'' Mr McDougall said.
''It was a very positive experience, there was a lot of delighted faces on skippers afterwards.''
Ararat West also came third overall in the record setting event, which was judged at the school a week prior to the Melbourne competition by the JRFH State Demonstration Teams' co-ordinator.
Some of the members of the school's development squad, including Molly Ganley, Katelin McDonald and Abby Moar, competed in the record setting event in the speed skipping and double under sections.
The Ararat West skipping team will be involved in the relay for life program at Alexandra Oval on Saturday November 14.
The students will perform at 9.30am as part of the day's health promotions.
