ARARAT - Organisers of the elite Country Cup Carnival pool competition in Ararat have labelled the event a great success.

Country Cup committee man and member of the Ararat team Bray McDonald said the committee had received a lot of positive feedback both from locals and out of town visitors.

''We had a really good response from all the teams,'' Mr McDonald said.

''A number of people commented that it was a good venue and that we hosted it well, so that should hold Ararat in good stead for hosting the event in the future.

''The Ararat Eagles did the catering and we got very good reports about that too.

''Economically, it was very good for the town. We're very happy with the way the weekend went.''

The event kicked off at the Ararat Performing Arts Centre last Friday evening with a knock out challenge.

The serious action got under way early Saturday morning with the first rounds of the round robin competition played.

Four divisions battled it out over the two days with the finals held Sunday afternoon.

Ararat just missed out on a place in the finals after falling one game short in the round robin competition to settle in fifth place in their division.

The division two honours went to Bendigo EBA which accounted for Bendigo Snooker in the grand final.

Ararat captain John Cannata made the all star team in recognition of being a leading game winner for the division.

Mr McDonald said the weekend was a lot of fun for all involved and that he was happy Ararat residents took the opportunity to witness some quality pool.

''A fair few people from the community dropped in to have a bit of a look and see how it operated,'' he said.

''It was good to have the support and have locals come up to us and ask how we were going.''

Mr McDonald said he would like to thank the organisers, committee and secretary of the Ararat 8-Ball Association Matt McRae for all their help, and extended a thank you to major supporters Ararat RSL and Mixx FM.

''We'd also like to thank the community for their support, especially all the local businesses and residents who assisted with sponsorship or who donated prizes for the raffle,'' he said.

The Country Cup Carnival is now in its 13th year.

Ararat has hosted the event twice and is looking forward to having the honour again sometime in the near future.
