REGION - The Stawell and Ararat Cross Country Club wound up its forty-second season with a presentation evening at the Ararat RSL last Friday night.
Club president Neil Wilde welcomed runners, life members and guests to the celebration of another successful cross country season.
The open championship was hotly contested, with the results the closest they have been for several years.
Two runners eventually tied for the honour of overall open champion.
The three championship events saw Anthony Mellors, with three seconds for a total of 24 points, share the award with Simon Gallagher who won two events and placed sixth in the other.
There was also a tie for third in the open section, with Bree Fiscalini and Charlie Jones unable to be separated on 16 points each.
The over 40 championship was taken out by Sven O'Flynn with 25 out of a maximum of 30 points.
Bree Fiscalini, who again won all three championship events, took out the ladies' championship for the second consecutive year.
Second and third in this section went to the club's youngest competitors in Ruby Klemm and Tayla Notting.
The over 50 championship section was also close, seeing the ever-reliable Charlie Jones finish just two points clear of Peter Gibson in second place. Keith Lofthouse took out third spot.
The aggregate competition, which is calculated on accumulated points over the season, is a reward for consistent running and for missing very few events.
This year Peter Gibson claimed the win with 137 points, just one point clear of Bree Fiscalini. Doug McKinnon finished third on 124 points.
It was the fourth time Gibson has taken out the award since he won his first in 1990.
An encouragement award for both improvement and consistency was presented to new runner Brad Makovec who went close to a win with two second placings in the last two events this year.
The club will hold its annual general meeting on November 24 at 7.30pm.
