30 Oct, 2009 09:22 AM
ARARAT - While next Sunday's NMIT Ararat Gold Cup promises a fun day of frocks, fillies and form guides, it also gives punters the opportunity to support a very worthwhile cause.

Visitors to the track are invited to attend the stylish Colour Your Life Luncheon Marquee, with a portion of the proceeds going towards supporting cancer services in Ararat and district.

Admission to the luncheon marquee costs $70, which includes a race book, canapes on arrival, a complementary beverage and a two-course gourmet lunch.

Guests will also be treated to a motivational talk by guest speaker, triple World Aerobic Champion and Ms Fitness World Champion, Sue Stanley.

Local identity John McDougall will keep things running smoothly in his role of master of ceremonies.

Mr McDougall has quite a bit of experience emceeing local fundraising events, and is looking forward to his first horse racing gig.

''I think I've been asked to emcee because I've had an association with fundraising events for the hospital in the past, particularly with cancer fundraising events,'' he said.

Like many people in the area, Mr McDougall has had personal experience with cancer.

''I suppose that inspires you to want to help,'' he said.

''The money will go to local cancer services, to be spent strictly locally through East Grampians Health Service.

''Cancer does touch a lot of people. Anything we can do to improve the local services will be good for the whole community.''

Latest Cancer Council figures show around 71 people are diagnosed with cancer in Ararat Rural City each year.

Around six times this number of local people will receive a diagnosis of cancer during their their lifetime.

Mr McDougall encourages the people of Ararat and district to really get behind the fundraising aspect of the cup by enjoying an afternoon of entertainment and indulgence in the Colour Your Life For Cancer marquee.

Tickets to the exclusive Colour Your Life for Cancer Luncheon Marquee are strictly limited.

They can can be purchased from the Ararat and Grampians Visitor Information Centre (5355 0281) or the Wimmera Racing Club (5358 5288).

Tickets are on sale until 5pm, Monday November 2.

Those attending the Ararat Cup via general admission will also have the chance to make a donation to the fundraising efforts via a wishing well located at the main entrance.

The community is being urged to show their support for the event which promises to be a great day out.
