Formum set to improve racing

03 Jul, 2009 09:34 AM
ARARAT - The Association of Victorian Harness Racing Clubs Inc will hold a forum at Ararat next Wednesday July 8 in an attempt to improve harness racing for members and spectators.

Association chairman Arthur Graham said harness racing in Victoria is facing its biggest challenge ever.

''The economic climate and the 2012 licensing agreements are beyond our control, but the one thing that we can deal with is the harness racing product,'' Mr Graham said.

The forums will be conducted at selected venues across the state to canvas views and ideas from interested parties.

Anyone is welcome to attend the forum in Ararat, whether they be owners, trainers, drivers, breeders, punters, sponsors, administrators or volunteers.

Mr Graham said everyone would have their voices heard.

''We give a guarantee to every person who attends a forum that their constructive views will be heard, collated and a submission forwarded to the Harness Racing Victoria Board, who are very receptive to the Association's initiative,'' he said.

The forum initiative was first raised at the Association's last general meeting and will aim to improve harness racing not only as a spectacle, but also as a betting medium.

Mr Graham believes the forums will generate significant interest and a wide range of suggestions.

''We believe that the time to act is now, as we have had positive feedback already from a number of people with genuine concerns about the future of harness racing in Victoria. They are excited at being given the opportunity to air their views.''

The Ararat forum will be held at the Russell T White Raceway on Wednesday July 8 at 7pm.
