GREAT WESTERN - The Great Western community and Wimmera Racing would still be smiling after the huge success of Great Western Cup meeting last Saturday.
Featuring horse racing, boat racing and fashions on the field, the day was a great day out for the whole family.
With over 1400 people strolling through the gates, spectators enjoyed racing at it's best on a well looked after track.
''There was a lot of activity getting around on the day,'' Wimmera Racing's Sandi Hortan said.
''It's not just about the racing, it's a great day out that the entire family can enjoy and did.
''The fields though were probably one of our best for a while.''
Watching former local Austy Coffey win the Seppelt Salinger Great Western Cup with Speed Academy was a spectacle, either from fence view or the XXXX Gold Retreat.
The Retreat generated plenty of interest among race-goers and provided crowd members with more than just racing to enjoy.
The Amcal Fashions on the field was well supported, with almost 30 contestants lining up to grab their claim to fame, exceeding judge and Amcal employee Casey Walker's expectations.
''We were expecting around 15 or so,'' Walker said.
''To get that many involved was great.
''It was definitely hard for all us judges to decide the winner.''
Ararat's Kylie Milne was judged best dressed for the day.
One of the biggest events of the day was the XXXX Gold Boat Regatta, which reeled in 18 teams from all around the district.
As teams dressed their boat from the Flintstones to a big chicken, all heats were evenly matched.
In the final it was the lightning fast Wiggles boat that stormed down the straight to be the inaugural winner, with the team comprising Damien Smith, Chad McSparron, Scott Rathgeber and Sarah Morris.
Executive administration and sales co-ordinator for Wimmera Racing, Kris Ratcliffe was pleased with the support of the boat regatta.
''It was awesome, everyone really enjoyed themselves,'' Ratcliffe said.
''We kept entries open until 1.30pm and that helped in gaining more entrants.
''It'll definitely be happening again next year.''
The Great Western Cup will be back again next year, aiming to be even bigger again.
Wimmera Racing's next meet is this Monday at Stawell.
