Top teams emerge

REGION - Round five of the Grampians Hockey Association season saw the top teams start to stamp their authority on the competition.

After being soundly beaten last week, Langi Ghiran bounced back with a powerful display against Mafeking in the first of the junior matches.

Ben Toogood, Brigitta Hodgetts Liam Cosgriff and Blake Moore were all multiple goal scorers for Langi Ghiran, while Mafeking's Bessie Baker were worked very hard in defence.

Nikki Hillier was dangerous up forward for Mafeking, but strong efforts from Jake and Zoe Mckew kept the Mafeking attack quiet, allowing Langi Ghiran to run out easy winners.

Cathcart are beginning to stamp themselves as competition favourites after a clinical display against Rhymney.

Rhymney's endeavour and commitment could not be questioned with strong games from Yvenne Cosgriff, Ashley Davis, Nina Murphy and Dana Murphy.

However, Cathcart played ruthlessly. Scott Toogood scored six goals and received excellent support from Shylee Corrigan, Greg Ferguson and the general Magnus Baker.

In the senior matches, Cathcart dominated general play in their clash with Rhymney.

Gary Baker put on a top display in the midfield, allowing dangerous forwards Nick Toogood and David Cosgriff plenty of opportunities.

Stout defence from Rhymney in the form of Jane Baker, Diana Hodgetts and Robert Starick kept Rhymney in touch.

When Russell Pearse scored a goal against the trend of play, Rhymney had some hope of salvaging a draw from the match, but Cathcart proved too good.

Ironbarks returned to the winner's list with a good team display against Langi Ghiran. Michelle Simpkin held down the goalkeeper's position well against the formidable Langi Ghiran forward line.
