ARARAT- The second round of junior hockey saw members of the Pumas' Development Squad stand out in both the junior and senior ranks.
The opening game of the junior competition pitted Mafeking against Langi Ghiran.
It was a keenly contested tussle, with Georgie and Bessie Baker showing leadership and pluck against the well organised Langi Ghiran outfit.
Joe Gibson was a constant thorn in the Langi Ghiran defence and it appeared that his goal scoring ability would see Mafeking sneak home.
However, Jake McKew, Liam Cosgriff and Blake Moore all worked hard for Langi Ghiran and with Ben Toogood providing a constant threat up forward, they snuck home to grab the points seven goals to six.
Rhymney found themselves without key players against the powerful Cathcart line up.
Puma development squad representatives Magnus Baker and Scott Toogood displayed great sportsmanship and leadership, helping and coaching their younger, less experienced opponents.
Zack Mills made a fine debut for Rhymney scoring one goal and proving lively up forward, while Nina Murphy, Gemma Hughes and Evan Cosgriff worked hard for their team.
The day however, belonged to young Greg Ferguson who scored seven goals for Cathcart.
Cathcart ran out winners 11-8.
An evenly matched game saw Purple overcome Black two goals to one in the women's competition.
Jane Baker, Sara Vella, Michelle Simkin and Angie McKew all played prominent games.
Susan Fitzpatrick and Paige Mills also stood out, while Jodie Gemmel was dangerous around goals.
In the first of the senior matches, Cathcart took on Rhymney.
Rhymney have had a large turnover of players and the side bears little resemblance to the team that dominated the competition for most of last year.
Cathcart, on the other hand, have retained the bulk of their premiership side from the previous season.
Rhymney relied heavily upon Pumas' representatives Magnus Baker, Bessie Baker and Brigitta Hodgetts to give them the run needed to overcome Cathcart's strong midfield.
Strong defence and a little luck saw Rhymney go into the half time break having kept Cathcart scoreless.
A massive upset looked on the cards until five minutes of brilliance from the uncanny Nick Toogood saw Cathcart break the game open.
Despite Rhymney's best efforts to answer they were unable to get back in to the game.
Langi Ghiran were victorious over Mafeking, after injuries reduced Mafeking to less than the required number of players.
The match was played out to the end with Mafeking leading on the scoreboard but ineligible to get the result.
Better players for Mafeking were Reuben Thompson, Paige Mills and Puma Josh Schwab, while Tony Hillier, Sam Brown and Puma representative Brayden Hughes stood out for Langi Ghiran.

Ladies will arrive at 12 noon for a 12.30pm start.
