REGION - A spectacular day of Grampians Hockey Association action saw the favourites claim victory in two hotly contested grand finals.
The senior grand final saw Rhymney come out firing against defending champions Cathcart.
The team shared the ball around well, with an obvious strategy to run their more talented opponents off their feet.
But it was Cathcart who drew first blood as Garry Baker defeated the goal keeper with a sizzling shot.
Rhymney fought back, attacking consistently through James Van Soest and Magnus Baker.
Russell Pearse scored a neat deflection to tie things up and Rhymney went to the break confident of overrunning Cathcart.
The next ten minutes of play were intense, with Cathcart pressing to break the game open.
Richard McCutcheon led the Rhymney side well and it looked as if the team might hold on, until a great cross from Nick Toogood allowed Baker to bring up Cathcart's second.
Rhymney threw caution to the wind looking for the equaliser, but Cathcart's class came to the fore, with Baker, Toogood and David Cosgriff beginning to dominate the midfield.
Jocelyn Cosgriff was able to take advantage of the harassed Rhymney defence to swoop on a loose ball and steer Cathcart to a two goal lead.
Rhymney never stopped trying, but try as it might, could not bridge the gap. Garry Baker was awarded player of the final.
In the junior grand final, surprise packet Rhymney took the game right up to its highly fancied opponents, with stand out performances from Trey Coad and Ashley Davis threatening to cause a massive upset.
Steady team play from Langi Ghiran kept it in front for most of the match as Zoe McKew proved a focal point in attack.
However, Rhymney refused to back down and appeared the fresher team when it drew level with five minutes left to play.
The Langi Ghiran side defended fiercely and managed one final telling break to score against the trend of play, earning a well-deserved premiership title.
Rhymney gave it everything and while disappointed with the result, can be proud of its improvement over the course of the year.
