Harness racing heats up Sunday

02 Oct, 2009 10:22 AM
ARARAT - Harness racing returns to the Russell T White Raceway this Sunday with an eight-race card including heats of the Spiller Family Sprint Series and the Stallion Station Pacific Fella Pace series.

The first event at 5.57pm is the Les Joslin 3yo Pace which includes two first starters from the strong Peter Manning stable and several others with sound recent form.

The Brooke Hansen trained Hezminenotours will be a contender with Imachictoo, driven by Kerryn Manning, a likely favourite for the event. Another strong chance will be the pole horse Goodlooking Rosie, a very well bred Modern Art filly recently placed at Geelong.

Race two is the first heat of the Stallion Station Pacific Fella Pace where there are a number of chances in the even field.

The Peter Manning trained Onebaddude will be the possible favourite after receiving a number of placings in recent runs.

Further chances are the Kevin Brough trained and driven Kimiko Three NZ and Star Schema to be driven by Ashley Matthews.

The Stallion Station Pace for R3/R5 horses has a small field of quality horses including the recent Ararat winner from the Jamie Stewart stable, VO Two NZ, and the Kerryn Manning trained and driven Imsafelyholm NZ a recent Ballarat winner. Paul Rowse's Oneaglewwings is also doing well, recently running a very good race to finish second at Horsham.

Race four on the program is the first heat of three in the Spiller Family Sprint Series.

A stand out chance is the Daryl Crone trained Hobbit County which is racing in very consistent form. The pole horse, The Red Opal, is resuming from a spell and will also be well in contention over the 1790-metre distance.

The program's fifth race is the second heat of the Spiller Family Sprint Series with Kerryn Manning again holding a winning chance with Sterita, who recently won at Horsham and was a finalist in the Queensland Oaks.

Springdam Embrace driven by Glen Craven is also a strong chance resuming from a spell. Prior to the spell it had won its previous two starts.

The Jim Bartke trained Benton Belle should also be a strong contender from the one barrier.

The Muscle Mass Trotters' Handicap is the sixth event with the Ararat Trotter of the Year Windy Dollar a likely favourite after good recent form with a win and placing at Ballarat in its last two starts.

Emerald Crusader, to be driven by Michelle Manning, and the Warren Bird trained and Adam Crettenden driven Maggie Truscott are both good chances in this event, although the stronger contenders are coming off handicaps.

The third heat of the Spiller Family Series sees a very evenly matched field of form horses with four of the nine starters having won races in their last two starts.

Perhaps the best chance with a good draw is the Michelle Manning trained pole marker Justa Jem Lombo from the three horse, Jamie Stewart's Whatabluff and the Grant Campbell driven Tales of Courage.

The final race of the evening is the Second heat of the Stallion Station Pacific Fella Series, which appears to be a very even race with little recent form to guide selections.

The Barry Dunn trained filly Seven Diamonds the best chance on recent form having been placed third at its last two outings.
