Rob scorches to medal

20 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
STAWELL - Another huge field of golfers flocked to Stawell Golf Club on Saturday for the Henderson Steel Monthly Medal.

Tough conditions greeted all but one of the players, as Rob Blachford seemed to be playing a completely different course and wind to the rest of us.

His score of net 66 was so far ahead of the rest that we almost called for a swab.

The only other person to break his handicap was Jayden Dignan, who shot an 88 off the bat to take C grade scratch.

Only eight shots better than Jayden saw Max Waters take the "gun" golfers grade scratch prize, with a net 73 being good enough for Craig Evans to survive a countback for handicap honours.

Peter McLeod's 84 helped him to win the scratch honours in the middle grade, with the latest hippie, Jimmy Freebairn taking handicap with an even par 71.

The ladies played a stroke event also with Jo Orr scoring the win with 71 from Madame Captain Joan Fletcher with 73.

Thanks to Gav, Lyn, Philip and Henderson Steel for their never ending support of Stawell Golf Club.

Nearest the pin winners were Leighton Dunn on the Stawell Hydraulics third, Bryce Homden on the Jeff O'Donnell Electrics & Air Conditioning sixth, Lyn Willcock took the substantial booty on the ninth, Judy Clayton on the Henderson Steel Ladies 10th, Ken Reid on the Hiway 8 Motel 13th, Phil Willcock on the Howden Toyota 17th and Phil 'Slippery' Matthews got the Lord's blessing on the Stawell Baptist Church 18th.

Wilky took out the chicken run in Division (1) with 18 won from Rod Sheppard on a countback and Magnum (Shaun Nalder) on 17.

Ross Hatton won Division (2) with 19 points from Johanna Kuypers and Jan Alborough on 18.

Saturday will be the second round of the Summer Fourball Championships with hit off between 12 and 12.30.

If you missed the first round, don't despair as prizes for the day are still up for grabs.

Next Thursday is Australia Day, but you knew that.

It was on the same day last year as well.

We will be playing a four person Ambrose par three spectacular with great prizes up for grabs.

Get your team together and be at the course before 11.45 for midday shot gun start.
