 Vital clash looms

Vital clash looms

20 Nov, 2009 08:33 AM
GCA - Conditions will play a big part in the important Grampians Cricket Association clash between Pomonal and St Andrews at Central Park tomorrow.

Sitting third and fourth on the ladder both teams are desperate to stay in the finals picture.

With showers forecast, the match could come down to who bats first, to set their opposition a difficult run chase.

If Pomonal can do this then it will look no further than Clayton Mackley and the Rudolph boys, Brendan and Jock to take control and post a reasonable score as they have done to date this season.

The fact that Pomonal failed on turf last time out against Swifts Great Western must be a concern, but equally concerning would be the inconsistent form of the Saints of late.

St Andrews doesn't have too many batsmen capable of posting big scores, but it does have a lot of players able to chip in throughout their whole batting line up, making it a dangerous team.

Vern Cann, Tom Foster, Shaun Smart and Andrew Dalgleish can all get among the runs on their day. All four are also the Saints' key to claiming the Pomonal scalps if the Tigers go into bat tomorrow.

Aradale has the tough ask of hosting Tatyoon at Alexandra Oval in what could see the home side cause an upset if its batsmen continue their brilliant form.

Clint Roger and Travis Horvatek have hit a purple patch with the bat and will need to be right on their game if Aradale get to bat first.

The only problem if this does happen is Taty's powerful bowling attack, consisting of Andy Maconachie, Tim McDougall and Adrian Gibson. All have been whipping the ball down at an electrifying pace and will cause difficulties for the Saints.

When Tatyoon gets its chance to bat Dave Astbury will hopefully make a return to the top order after missing last week. Astbury, Andrew Ward and Andrew McDougall all form a lethal batting combination at the top and a big score from one of these players will happen.

Ladder leaders Swifts/Great Western will be looking for an outright victory when it takes on Buangor at Halls Gap tomorrow.

The Combine have been the association's benchmark once again and although not fielding their full team as yet, they will not be troubled by Buangor.

Buangor's hopes of claiming its first win have been hurt by the possible inclusion of classy batsmen Travis Nicholson and Wayne Walton, bringing the Combine's batting order into an almost unbeatable state.

Richard O'Connell hit the mark last week with his bowling, and along with Jack Ganley could pose as the only real threats to Swifts/Great Western's attempt at outright.

Can Rhymney/Moyston finally produce a big innings with the bat against Youth Club and bring home its first win of the season? That's the question everyone is asking.

Playing at Moyston, it has the ability at the top of the order to make a big score, captain Shane Spriggs has proven that before, he just needs players around him to hold the team's wicket.

The Clubbers boast a handy bowling attack in Steve LeGassick, Cam Kimber and Daniel Forbes, who have the ability to move the ball around and can give Rhymney grief if they're not on their game.

An interesting match is definitely on the cards here.
