Strong opening stands

19 Jan, 2010 08:04 AM
GCA - Youth Club put together one of the biggest opening stands for a long time in its Grampians Cricket Association match with Buangor.

Losing the toss and being asked to bat, captain Steve LeGassick and Nic Baird made the most of their time at the crease.

Hammering the Buangor bowlers on their home turf, the pair put on a massive 222 runs before LeGassick was dismissed for 65.

Baird, who dominated the partnership, was next to go 34 runs later, but not before he had made his maiden A grade century, finally being dismissed after smashing a big innings of 174 runs. This included 29 fours and two sixes.

The top opening stand was well supported by Todd Matthews (37 not out) and Jamie Solyom (35 not out), helping to see the score reach 3/354 before the Clubbers declared.

In reply Buangor made a steady start and at stumps, were 2/82, with Mick Healy and century-maker Baird making the break through.

A similar big opening partnership from Pomonal pair Clayton Mackley and Nick Maddison has them in the box seat in their clash with Aradale.

Mackley reached his century (103) before he was caught, while Maddison was unlucky not to hit triple figures, falling six runs short on 94.

Their 209 run stand was backed up by half centuries from captain Jock Rudolph (51) and Ian Jordan (50 not out).

The Tigers' score sat at a strong 7/383 at the end of play, setting Aradale a huge task this Saturday at Richardson Oval.

Right arm off-spinner Clint Rodger was the pick of the bowlers with 3/36 from six overs, while captain Matt Baldock bowled well for 2/75 off 21 overs.

No big individual scores were made, but St Andrews still managed to post 8/282 against leaders Swifts/Great Western at Central Park.

Top scores from Shaun Smart (38), Graeme Foster (37), David Hosking (36) and Tom Foster (35) helped the Saints keep the score sheet ticking over, picking up runs with ease off the Combine bowlers.

All but one Saints' batsmen reached double figures, with medium-pacer Gary Ranton the best of the Combine bowlers with 3/50 off 13 overs.

On their day the St Andrews bowling attack can be very damaging and will need to bowl right on the money to contain Swifts/Great Western this Saturday.

Following the trend, Rhymney/Moyston won the toss and sent opponents Tatyoon into bat at Alexandra Oval.

Getting off to a slow start, Taty was struggling at 2/13 after two early wickets.

Finding its feet with the help of Andrew McDougall's 61 and Richard Love's 58, Tatyoon hit its way to a comfortable 8/228.

A late knock of 30 from Andy Maconachie helped the Hawks' cause.

Mal Russell bowled good line and length to capture 4/53 from 16 overs and finish as Rhymney's best bowler.

Going into bat, Rhymney/Moyston is in a bit of trouble with father/son combination Paul and Shane Spriggs losing their wickets early.

Rhymney unsteadily finished the eight overs at 2/17.

Andy Maconachie and Adrian Gibson grabbed the early wickets and will be out in full force again Saturday.
