Game on for Saints

26 Feb, 2010 07:57 AM
GCA - The much anticipated finals' series in the Grampians Cricket Association is finally here and Swifts/Great Western is the team to watch, aiming to go back-to-back.

The reigning premiers have a tough ask playing St Andrews, however they have the home ground advantage at Central Park, which should prove important to gaining a grand final berth.

The home and away season saw the Combine drop just one match, that being against the Saints, although since that clash Swifts/Great Western has evened the score with a hard fought win in round nine.

The Combine's strength is their batting, featuring a good mix of hard hitters and fine stroke makers in Travis Nicholson, James Devery, Gary Ranton and Nic Clough.

Devery has made a combined 155 runs in his past two innings', while Nicholson, Ranton and Clough have endured some bash and crash times at the crease of late.

All four are the key to Swifts/Great Western producing a creditable score.

St Andrews is also in the same position as the Combine, boasting some top-of-the-line batsmen that have hit good form at the right end of the season.

Century maker Lauchie Dalgleish, and all-rounders Tom Foster and Vern Cann, along with Graeme Foster all are in good stead and should pose major threats when given the chance.

Leading wicket-takers Marc Brilliant and Ben Iseppi will lead the Combine into battle with the ball, and along with young Jackson Dark, the trio will use the turf wicket to swing momentum in their favour.

The Saints' bowling attack is much like Swifts, three or four quality paceman.

These include Andrew Dalgleish, Cann and Scott Dadswell, plus Lauchie Dalgliesh.

The two-day battle over Saturday and Sunday will be close, but it should see Swifts/Great Western make consecutive grand final appearances.

As quickly as Youth Club moved into third place, it should shoot straight back out again as it faces the ultimate challenge of playing Tatyoon on the Hawks' home turf.

Finishing in second place, Taty almost snuck into minor premier placing, but it will be pleased with the outcome, fronting up against the Clubbers who weren't expected to go as well as they have.

Old heads Rob Scott, Jamie Solyom and Phil Hall would be pleased with the efforts their young outfit has put in so far and will expect another strong display from the likes of Cam Kimber, Jamie Bach, Nic Baird and Todd Matthews.

The power of the Tatyoon unit may prove too much to handle though, holding a lethal bowling attack of Andy Macconachie, Tim McDougall, Adrian Gibson and Andrew McDougall.

However, its batting line up isn't as strong as previous years and could come under fire if the Clubbers can get an early break through.

Jarrod Blandford is in sparkling form with the bat, as is Richard Tucker, both coming off centuries, while Andrew McDougall is another who is important if Taty is to make a big score.

Tatyoon should win this semi final clash tomorrow, but expect Youth Club to give the side a big test.
