Aradale keeps hopes alive

09 Feb, 2010 08:12 AM
GCA - Aradale has kept its slim finals' hopes alive with a close first innings win over Buangor in the Grampians Cricket Association.

Chasing down the Buangor total of 192, Aradale resumed at 3/80 and took its first innings score to 208, in 57 overs.

Batting a second time, Buangor cruised to 7/157 at the close of play to put an end to any hopes Aradale may have had of outright points from this match.

Jack Fraser after his big first innings was in the runs again with his 66, while opener Jack Ganley contributed 61 runs.

Youth Club's fighting first innings win over St Andrews has all but assured them of a spot in the A grade finals' series.

The fightback led by batsmen Jamie Solyom and Nic Baird, was a season defining effort for the Clubbers.

Chasing down St Andrews' first innings total of 159 runs most considered Youth Club were facing an uphill battle when they finished at 4/77 after the opening day's play.

The Saints bowlers were on top and were looking to quickly finish off Youth Club on day two to guarantee themselves a finals' spot.

Solyom led the charge, his match winning performance of 99 not out giving the Clubbers the upper hand.

Solyon had resumed on 0 not out, but soon showed he was in fine touch and was willing to patiently see his team across the line.

Nic Baird (31) added 10 runs to his resumed innings and when Brendan Pieters knocked his stumps over with the score at 5/85, the Saints would still have rated themselves a winning chance.

Todd Matthews (14) and Ajay Chavan (11) did add some support to Solyom, but when Andrew Dalgleish struck to dismiss Cam Kimber it was anyone's match with the score at 9/156.

Solyom with the support of Jack Kelly, who smashed three fours in his innings of 23, saw Youth Club across the line, finishing at 9/211 and grabbing the vital first innings points.

Veteran spinner Dalgleish was the best of the Saints bowlers with his 3/78.

Pomonal's finals' hopes officially ended when it was almost on the receiving end of an outright result in the clash against Tatyoon.

Declaring their first innings closed at 8/205, a lead of 100 runs, Taty sent the Tigers back in and almost pulled the outright result having Pomonal at 8/58 at the close of play.

Tim McDougall struck again with his five second innings wickets for Tatyoon.

This performance from Pomonal, was no doubt its worst for the season.

Swifts/Great Western put the finishing touches on the top spot with an outright result against Rhymney/Moyston.

Chasing down Rhymney/Moyston's 124, the Combine took their score to 5/265 before declaring.

Opener James Devery in one of his best batting performance, remained unbeaten on 100, when the innings declared. He hit eight fours on his way to his century.

Batting a second time Rhymney/Moyston stumbled again and was dismissed for just 106 with spinner Marc Collins stepping up to grab 6/27 and give the Combine an outright win.

In C grade Elmhurst batsman Tom Kaye notched up his second century this season with his innings of 133 against Aradale.
