ARARAT - Three local basketballers represented Country Victoria at the 2010 Pacific Coast Slam at Port Macquarie in New South Wales.
Lake Bolac's Josh Keys and brother James were selected to play in the Victorian Goldminers squads, while Ararat basketballer Xavier Vearing lined up with the under 15 Victoria Bushrangers side which eventually took out the tournament.
The Pacific Coast Slam was held from January 15 to 20 and all three teams looked set to take Port Macquarie by storm after impressive first round wins.
Josh's under 17 team defeated the NSW Waratahs by 28 points in a high standard match while James' under 15 Goldminers' side easily accounted for Queensland North after maintaining a 43 point lead.
Vearing and his Bushranger teammates started the tournament on a high note after thrashing New Zealand Rimu by whopping 76 points.
All three boys continued their winning streaks in the second round by recording comfortable victories.
At the conclusion of round three the under 17 Goldminers and under 15 Bushrangers were shaping up as the teams to beat. Both sides remained undefeated with Josh and Vearing making solid contributions.
Unfortunately for James his team came unstuck in the third round after going down to the NSW Kookaburras by 29 points.
The final round of competition saw all teams notch up wins and head into the finals' series in favourable positions.
Despite making it through the opening rounds undefeated, Josh's under 17 side lost its first semi final match against QLD Southern District by 15 points.
As a result they were forced into a play-off for third position the following day.
It was a tremendous effort for the under 17s to put their loss behind them and play a impressive play-off game against the South Australian Magpies.
After a hard fought match they managed to come away with a 17 point win and claim third place in the tournament.
The under 15 Goldminers' loss in round three sent James' side into a semi-final face-off against Vearing's team.
In a tense match that could have gone either way, the Bushrangers managed to pull away in the final quarter to defeat the Goldminers by 25 points.
They eventually took out the tournament and the title of under 15 2010 Pacific Coast Slam Champions after smashing the South Australian Magpies by 50 points in the grand final.
James' team finished the competition in fourth place after losing its next play-off match against NSW Kookaburras by a mere nine points.
The three boys said it was fantastic to play at such a high level of basketball.
All said they enjoyed the social side of competing and the friendly nature of the Pacific Coast Slam.
