Students shine at state level

17 Nov, 2009 08:14 AM
LAKE BOLAC - Lake Bolac College's Callum Baker and Tayla Notting gave first-rate performances at the Victorian Secondary Schools' Sports' Association Athletics' State Finals at Olympic Park, Melbourne.

Both students recorded personal best times in their respective events, picking up gold medals for their efforts.

Baker's 40.45-metre throw in the boys' 13 years' discus event saw him finish in first place, as did his 15.24-metre shot put attempt.

Notting received gold in the girls' 14 years' 800-metre event with a time of 2:22:05 minutes.

Her 5:02:62min finish in the 1500-metre run saw her awarded the bronze medal.

Lake Bolac College sports co-ordinator Roger Flanner said the school was delighted at their students' accomplishments.

''To achieve three first placings and one third is a testament to the enthusiasm, dedication and consistent sport of these two students,'' he said.

''Both these students are humble, hardworking and dedicated athletes who have represented the college with great pride.''

Since qualifying at the Western Zone Country Athletics carnival in Geelong in May, Baker and Notting embarked on a rigorous five-month training regime to prepare themselves for the state finals.

Both students train diligently at lunch time, after school and on weekends.

Baker attends regional sessions in Ballarat to gain instruction from highly regarded coach Lindsay Burgoyne while Notting is a member of the Stawell and Ararat Cross Country Club.

''It has been great fun coaching both Callum and Tayla, and reaching personal best results at the State Finals has been terrific for them,'' Mr Flanner said.

''Tayla's sister Georgia just missed out on making the State finals in the girls' 16 years' 400m - as cousins of Tim Notting there is obviously a lot of talent in the family.''

Mr Flanner said the Lake Bolac College students and staff, in particular teacher Mark Howard and student training partners Daniel Evans and Brendan Park, should all be congratulated for their support of the two students, as should their parents.

The next step is the National Under Age Championships to be held in Tasmania in late November.
