Water contaminated at Alexandra Lake

02 Nov, 2007 07:11 AM
ARARAT - A burst pipe in the irrigation system to Alexandra Oval, at the rear of J Ward, last Wednesday evening resulted in a quantity of recycled water leaking into Alexandra Lake, forcing Ararat Rural City Council to erect contamination warning signs.

Council's manager infrastructure Ron Quinn said standard procedure for any leaks of this nature was to contact the Environmental Protection Authority, which advised council to place signs on the lake warning of possible contamination.

The lake water was tested and nutrient levels were slightly elevated at the time, but the lake was given the all clear yesterday.

Mr Quinn said the nutrient levels in the lake were monitored in consultation with the EPA.

He said the signs remained at the lake for a week as a precautionary measure.

Mr Quinn added that the leaking section of PVC pipe had been replaced with copper to reduce the risk of leaking or burst pipes in the future.
