Struggling boys offered hope

28 Jan, 2005 08:31 AM
A new initiative will assist teenage boys in Ararat who are experiencing difficulties at home or school.

The program, called Typo Station, offers an initial five week alternative education program for teenage boys, assisting them to develop a more positive attitude towards schooling and relationships.

Chief executive officer at Typo Station, Andy Kay, said with the new school year starting and more and more boys struggling educationally, emotionally and socially this is a good time for both schools and parents to consider alternatives that could prevent young men from falling through the cracks.

"The start of the school year can be a really challenging time for boys who aren't coping with mainstream school and are perhaps struggling with problems at home," Mr Kay said.

"I'd encourage teachers and parents in Ararat to consider Typo Station as an option for boys who are experiencing difficulties in those areas and are at risk of expulsion or early school leaving."

The early intervention initiative involves a residential experience completed over five weeks at a remote rural property in north-east Victoria, also called Typo Station, a number of follow up programs and ongoing mentoring over two years.

Through experiences including a nine day wilderness hike, pioneer skills workshops, community involvement and simple living, Typo Station aims for young people to build the initiative and resilience necessary to stay on track and have a positive future.

Typo Station is offering six programs in 2005. Applications are now invited for the February program. Those interested should contact Typo Station on 1300 723 317. For further information visit www.typostation.org.au.
