ARARAT - Ararat Police have refuted claims by Member for Western Victoria Region John Vogels that Ararat Police Station will be unmanned over the summer holiday season.
Liberal MP John Vogels said he feared police shortages could result in the Ararat Police Station being closed or being frequently unmanned over the summer holiday season.
However, Acting Senior Sergeant Warren Groves of Ararat Police said this was definitely not the case in Ararat.
''There is no chance of the police station closing or being unmanned over the summer season,'' Act Sen Sgt Groves said.
''We wish to reassure the Ararat public that we will be be fully prepared for the summer season.
''We are a 24 hour police station that has never been unmanned.''
In response to a story from Ararat Police in last Friday's edition regarding a call for residents to `dob in a hoon', Mr Vogels indicated that allocating more police to patrol Ararat's streets was a better way to catch local hoon drivers, as opposed to expecting community members to do the job by calling Melbourne's Crimestoppers hotline.
''There is no doubt our police are better placed to catch hoon drivers `in the act', given adequate police staffing,'' Mr Vogels said.
''The situation is bound to worsen as a wave of newly licensed hoon drivers hit our streets at schools end and across the Christmas and summer holiday season.
''John Brumby wants to disguise the impact of police shortages across country Victoria by restricting the number of calls made to country stations.''
Mr Vogels said he feared police would be stripped from country towns to cover holiday hot spot areas over the ensuing months.
Mr Vogels said the Brumby Government must provide a guarantee to Ararat and Stawell communities that they will not suffer diminished policing in their towns over the summer months.
However, Act Sen Sgt Groves said Ararat Police Station will be fully prepared and members will be able to manage the full range of policing duties.
