ARARAT - More than 350 motor bikes will roar into town on Sunday as part of the fourth annual Grampians Ride to Remember.
This year a particular focus of the ride will be bike and rider safety, with Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe attending to address the riders before they depart.
The 178 kilometre circuit will take in Maroona, Willaura, Moyston, Pomonal for morning tea, Lake Fyans and back to Ararat for a barbecue lunch and Show n Shine at Alexandra Gardens.
This year there will be just one main ride, which has been organised by a sub committee of the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation Ararat Branch and includes local motorcycle enthusiasts, police, local government, community groups and Ararat branch members.
All proceeds from the fourth annual Grampians Ride to Remember will be donated to East Grampians Health Service for a new CT scanner for the John McNally Medical Imaging Department.
Acting Sergeant Shaun Allen from Northern Grampians Highway Patrol said the circuit chosen by organisers took in some of this region's best scenic roads, but he asked that all riders consider some important safety points.
"Riders are to wear appropriate safety attire, such as helmets, jackets and pants and are reminded to consider the spirit of the day; a pleasant scenic and social ride for a great cause - it's not a race," he said.
"Riding as part of a larger group such as this needs participants to be more aware of each other on the road and exercise a bit more patience than riders may be used to."
Police are asking riders to be aware of the variable road conditions, with a large part of the circuit having narrower roads, some with uneven surfaces, particularly since the recent rain and flood events.
Throughout the ride nominated marshalls on bikes will also be marking corners and will be riding within the main group so there is strictly no overtaking of marshalls.
"Be aware that marshalls may need to overtake some other riders as part of their role, so we ask that you keep an eye on your mirrors more than you would normally do," Act Sgt Allen said.
Act Sgt Allen also encouraged all riders to participate in the Show n Shine on their return to Alexandra Gardens and to also take advantage of talking to bike safety experts who will be on hand.
"Ross Wright of Stay Upright Motorcycle Techniques will be at the gardens upon our return," he said.
"Make sure you take a moment to talk to Ross about upcoming courses. Everyone who makes an enquiry goes into the draw for a free Advanced Course at Broadford.
Above all, police and the Blue Ribbon Foundation want all riders to enjoy their ride and the spirit in which it is held.
Ararat and district residents are invited to see off the 350 plus riders from the Ararat Performing Arts Centre at 9.30am on Sunday and also head down to Alexandra Gardens at 12.30pm to view the bikes on their return and enjoy the community barbecue.
