AVOCA - For the past 15 years a dedicated group of Maryborough cyclists have organized a 100 kilometre cycling ride, welcoming riders of all abilities and taking in the scenic roads around Avoca.
The ride, known as Pyrenees Magic, leaves Avoca at 9am on Saturday November 14 and takes in the townships of Moonambel, Landsborough, Elmhurst and Amphitheatre and back to Avoca.
Riders come from as far as Hopetoun, Geelong and Gippsland to take on the circuit, and with as many as 180 riders, everyone finds a group to suit their own pace.
The aim of the ride is for each person to ride within their capability and have an enjoyable day out. Rest stops are provided at Landsborough and Elmhurst with drinks and snacks and in the event of not being able to complete the ride there is a `Sag wagon' to transport you back to the start point.
Each rider who completes the circuit receives an embroidered patch and a cycling related gift as well as being in the running for spot prizes throughout the day.
The ride is a fund raiser for the Maryborough team who ride in the Murray to Moyne event which riders cycle from Mildura to Port Fairy in 24 hrs, raising money for the Maryborough and district health service.
All of the money raised is used to purchase specific equipment for the Health service and last year totalled $15,000 which provided for a new baby monitoring unit.
Entry forms can be found at Avoca information centre or contact Andrew Thomas phone 03 54612605, email andeb@netconnect.com.au .
