ARARAT - Ararat Primary School's Rock and Roll Preps have won third place in the Australian Children's Music Foundation's national songwriting competition.
Preps Lachlan Meehan, Kiara Madex, Lachlan Fiegert, Tahnee Sobey, Abbie Bligh, Lakita Preston, Joshua Boyd, Lily O'Flynn, Sam Drew, Cortney Smith and Emily Sheffield rocked out with their song `Best Friends Forever', defeating hundreds of other entrants Australia wide.
The competition Ambassador, Ian `Dicko' Dickson of Australian Idol fame, said school children from around the country demonstrated wonderful creativity and talent.
''The calibre of songwriting has been exceptional and yet again the judging panel had a difficult challenge awarding prizes in each of the categories,'' Mr Dickson said.
The Ararat group was awarded $300 to spend on musical equipment for their school.
Teacher Tammy Meehan said the students will be allowed to select what they would like to purchase using an online catalogue.
''All the new equipment will go to our prep program,'' Ms Meehan said.
Ararat Primary's preps wrote the song as part of their Reggio Emilia Inspired pathways session, with the help of Ms Meehan.
After practising the song for a few weeks, the preps recorded their magnum opus on the computer and produced CDs for their families.
Ms Meehan decided to enter the song in the Australian Children's Music Foundation's competition after seeing it advertised on television.
