ARARAT - East Grampians Health Service is inviting residents of Ararat to join them in a community walk from Ararat Performing Arts Centre to the Ararat Hospital as part of its community celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of East Grampians Health SErvice this Sunday.
The walk will follow on from the parade of nurses that commences with a short ceremony at the Edith Cavell Memorial at 11am. The nurses will then travel by vintage car, lead by Mayor Cr Gwenda Allgood, down Barkly Street and turn into Vincent Street to pick up the community procession.
East Grampians Health Service staff and families and the community lead by the Bendigo Chinese Lion Team will follow on foot for the historic walk up the hill to the Hospital.
The involvement of the Bendigo Chinese Lion Team will acknowledge the association of the Chinese goldminers back in the 1860s and the original Ararat Hospital.
The health service is hoping a big crowd will turn out and perhaps dress up for the walk. Emergency services' vehicles, including the Police Traffic Management Unit, will also be involved.
The community walkers will be lead by Member for Ripon Joe Helper, East Grampians Health Service board president Graeme Foster, chief executive Rob Bulmer and director of clinical services Helen Watt.
The Bendigo Chinese Lion Team will have a busy two days in Ararat with performances at the Gum San buffet breakfast earlier in the morning. On the Saturday night, in conjunction with a performance at the reunion dinner, they will be visiting local hotels and restaurants in Barkly Street for a shop blessing finishing at the Ararat RSL.
The Bendigo Chinese Association has close links with Ararat, and its performers have entertained previously at special events that have celebrated the connection of the Chinese on the goldfields in the Ararat area in the 1800s through to today's partnership with Ararat Rural City's sister city Taishan in China.
Their visit to Ararat has been made possible through the support of the Ararat Rural City community events program.
The Chinese Lion that will perform this time is a different creature to the Dragon. Only two performers operate the lion, one in the `head' or front legs, the other as the body and hind legs, or `tail'. Their performance movements are more acrobatic and playful. The Lion will perform with an instrumental group which includes a drum, gongs, and cymbals. A team of fourteen will be involved in Ararat with possibly two types of lions.
On arrival of the combined parade and procession at East Grampians Health Service, the community is invited to join other guests for the official ceremony on the steps of Pyrenees House at 12 noon, then stay around for a community barbecue and refreshments made available by the Ararat Lions Club and Ararat Ys Menettes.
From 1pm onwards Pyrenees House will open for the public to view a historical exhibition of collected memorabilia, with many artefacts on loan from personal collections. There will also be tours of the health service site at 1.30pm and 2.30pm.
East Grampians Health Service board of management and staff look forward to the Ararat and district community joining the community celebrations over the long weekend, which will include registrations, an exhibition and tours from Pyrenees House in Ararat on the Saturday, and the Willaura Hospital Outdoor Market on the Monday.
